Hi John and thanks for your presenting an interesting perspective. I am sure that how we dress impacts our first impression with most people we meet. However, we will ultimately be judged by how effective we are in business. You obviously are able to be successful at both first and ultimate impressions. Joe

One speaker now says, “dress as if you are successful.” He wears Hawaiian shirts, shorts, and flip flops.

I had personal experience that leads me to believe it may be changing.

Doing marketing for a CPA, I’d set the appointment on the telephone, we’d both go to the first appointment with the business owner prospect. The CPA dressed to kill, tailored suits, etc. I’d wear sport coat and open collar shirt.

When I set the appointment of course I’d give the CPA a very big build up, talk about how many business owners he’d helped over the years, etc etc. So they were expecting to talk with a very successful person.

What surprised me was how often the prospect would think I was the CPA when we all first met.

I wonder if overdressing is just as big of a problem as underdressing.

Another insightful post. This is so true. We DO unfortunately tend to judge people by appearances. However, in the business world, a professional appearance is a necessary fact of life. Look the part and you will GET the part.
