Over this past weekend, our country celebrated its 233rd birthday. For most people, the Fourth of July holiday is an opportunity to fire up the grill, spend some time outdoors with family and friends, and hopefully see some amazing fireworks after the sun goes down. We truly are fortunate to live in a country that affords every one of its citizens so many wonderful rights and freedoms. So, I have an important question to ask you today and it is related to your professional growth and success. What did you do to celebrate? Did you take an extra day or two off from work? Maybe you spent the day renewing your interest in fishing or hiking, activities that had long ago gotten lost in your busy work schedule? Whatever you did, please know that taking time to relax is just as important as burning the midnight oil at your desk.
You must make it a point, on a regular basis, to examine your daily schedule and ask yourself if you are maintaining balance in your life. The motto of “work hard, play hard” should be a great barometer for you to use during this reflective examination. Perhaps you really need to work sixty hours a week for a period of time in order to achieve your professional goals. But, make sure that you are also taking time to unwind in an environment and manner that is completely unrelated to your job. The problem of career burnout is very real, and takes its toll on our bodies both physically and emotionally. You will reach a point at which any further work efforts simply result in diminishing returns and you will come to resent the career that should be a source of fulfillment and excitement for you.
In my newly released book, Act As If It Were Impossible to Fail, I share many tips about how to move forward in your career and achieve the great salary raises that you desire. Taking time to enjoy some play and leisure in your life is certainly a key element! I am excited to share my book with you, and I hope to hear your feedback about how you think my suggestions may apply to your particular situation.
