Give back because it’s the right thing to do

I can’t take credit for my innate sense to give back.  The women on the left in the picture is my Aunt Mary and here is a great story of how she continues to  serve her community at the age of 93.    My favorite quote from the story is “I guess I was volunteered” when she tells why she continues to serve her church for 8 hours every Friday during Lent to ensure a successful fish fry.

I know that “she has been volunteered” for at least 75 years because that is when my grandfather passed away and she and my 19 year old Uncle Tom had to take in my Grandmother, my 18 month old dad, his twin brother and his 5 year old sister.   They raised my dad’s family as well as 5 boys of their own.  What a basketball team that family made, but that is a different story.  My Uncle Tom and Aunt Mary taught several generations how to give by example and I could not be more grateful.

I must admit that I am so busy as a traveling consultant that lately my giving consists more of my money than my time, however,  I still make time for anybody that asks for coaching about the challenges at their job.  Feel free to challenge me on this one.   That said, when measured against my Aunt Mary, I feel very small.

You will find many posts from me on giving back and how it will accelerate your career, but in this post I want to primarily brag about one of the people that taught me to give back because it’s the right thing to do and secondarily I want to encourage you to do the same.

Be bold this week.  Volunteer for something.  Give back.

And then leave a comment let us all know what you did to give others good ideas for ways that they can give back!
