There have been many stories coming out of the current World Cup action that is taking place in South Africa. In a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory against Algeria, the United States team moved into the Round of 16. Go USA! The mysterious North Korean team appeared on the field with very few people knowing anything about their talent level or practice regimen. Stories in the media, which are seemingly reproduced in nearly identical fashion every four years, questioned whether or not this would be the year that soccer finally catches on in America.
Despite these notable headlines, there is one story that I believe surpasses all others from the World Cup–the vuvuzela. If you have tuned into any of the games, you undoubtedly have heard this monotonous, droning buzz coming from the stands. There even have been complaints filed by viewers and broadcasters that the collective noise coming from these horns took away from their ability to focus on the game and there were some discussions about banning the instrument from stadiums.
Instead of taking away the vuvuzela, I say that we look at its merits in an entirely different atmosphere–the corporate office. Here are a few ways I suggest making this horn a part of our professional efforts:
1. When an employee lands a big deal or finds a way to save the company some money, encourage his co-workers to blow vuvuzelas in celebration. What a way to build morale!
2. Is someone repeatedly falling asleep at his desk before afternoon meetings? One loud blast from the vuvuzela in his ear and he won’t sleep for weeks!
3. The next time you on an airplane for a business trip and a child won’t stop screaming because his mom forgot his PSP game console, hand out a vuvuzela to every adult on the plane and an answer the kid’s complaints in musical unison.
So, join me in thinking outside the box? How can you use the vuvuzela in your workplace?

I think, for those who dwell in cubes, whenever one of their eight managers comes to check on whether they got a copy of the latest TPS report, the employee should be able to answer with a series of vuvuzela blows..
Should cut down on TPS reports. And managers…
