Founder of Build-a-Bear Offers Great Example for All to Follow

CNN recently posted an article on its website featuring the founder of Build-a-Bear Workshop, Maxine Clark.  This company, which boasts around 400 stores in malls throughout the country, allows children to design and make their own stuffed animals.  Last year, revenues for the store reached $468 million in only the twelfth year since its inception.  When reading Ms. Clark’s story about how her great success developed, I found several of the principles that I stress in my book were a part of her efforts.  I was happy to learn of Build-a-Bear’s success because I have a 3 year old who is a big fan!

1. Have Fun! – You need to enjoy the work that you are doing.  Many adults questioned the concept of Build-a-Bear, thinking that no one would want to spend the time making their own stuffed animals, but kids jumped at the chance right away.  Maybe we would all benefit from seeing our possibilities through the eyes of a child once in a while.  They naturally take joy in everyday experiences, where we tend to worry and think of the potential pitfalls.

2. Find a Niche — Maxine Clark got the idea for Build-a-Bear while shopping with a young girl who suggested that they could make their own teddy bears instead of buying someone else’s concept of how the teddy bear should look.  Is there an aspect of your chosen industry that hasn’t been developed?  Can you pitch a new way of production or a new base of clients?  You need to figure out how you offer something unique.

3. Show You Are Worth the Investment — The first Build-a-Bear store received its funding from Ms. Clark’s personal investment in the project.  She knew that no one else would believe in her if she didn’t show in some concrete way that she believes in herself.  Whether it be through your time, your relationships, or your money, show potential clients and employers that you are dedicated to your profession.

The advice that I offer in my new book Act As If It Were Impossible to Fail is relevant regardless of the specific product or service you are providing.  I can help you accelerate success in your career and help you to make your profession even more rewarding.  I hope you will check it out!
