CAT | Giving Back

I am a strong advocate of the fact that we are all one community, whether we live down the street from one another or halfway around the world. When we give back to others, we make life better for everyone and we most likely learn something along the way. So, what can you and I do as individuals to help the people living in the Gulf region?

I can’t take credit for my innate sense to give back. The women on the right of the picture is my Aunt Mary and here is a great story of how she continues to serve her community at the age of 93. My favorite quote from the story is “I guess I was volunteered” when she tells why she continues to serve her church for 8 hours every Friday during Lent to ensure a successful fish fry.

For those of you who know me and/or are regular readers of this blog, you are aware that I am a big advocate both of networking and finding ways to give back to your community. The reality is, these two great activities have the potential to create synergies more often than you realize, especially if you are looking for employment

I have written many times before about the importance of giving back. Sometimes this means offering advice to the new guy in your office. Other times it can involve volunteering your time at a community center. Some times, the only thing you can do is to simply send money. In this instance, your efforts may make the difference between life and death.

PLEASE don’t forget the brave soldiers that are fighting for us and those that have already completed tours. Take the time to let a soldier know how much you appreciate their service when you see one. Find a way to contribute back to them for the large contributions they and their families make.

I believe that your focus should always be on how you can help others and not searching for the ways that people can help you. Those who choose to extend their hand in service will discover a benefit one way or another.

Many of you have found your own ways to give back, or know some inspiring stories of people who have made a difference. Please share your examples here. Let’s learn from one another and renew our efforts to get involved.

I am just finishing Tim Sanders’ book Saving the World and Work and I am so fired up. For those of you that don’t know Tim, he is the best-selling author of two of my favorite books, Love is the Killer App and The Likeability Factor. In Saving the World at Work, Tim tells us that “social responsibility will be the new king” and that companies that don’t embrace social responsibility will go the way of Braniff Airlines, Woolworth, and Commodore Computers.

Think about some of the most successful and respected coaches in professional sports.  Phil Jackson is one man who certainly comes to mind.  He has won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls and four with the Los Angeles Lakers, the most recent coming just this year.  He is known as the “Zen master” of [...]

Giving Back is Good for Everyone

My wife and I recently had the opportunity to attend the 3rd Annual Gala held on behalf of Homes for Our Troops here in Boston. I felt humbled and honored to be in the presence of some of our nation’s bravest heroes, and to hear the stories of many more who could not attend. Homes [...]
