twitter pointless babbleTwitter has fast become an extremely popular social networking medium and many are rushing to find out what all the hype is all about.  My observation has been that many people on Twitter don’t really have a plan and are just tweeting in the wind.  The USA Today article above seems to justify my viewpoint.   My recent post on Twitter Taboos expands on the need to have a plan for Twitter use and to be aware that every Tweet contributes to your online reputation.

Don’t get me wrong, I am certainly not a social media expert and I know that I still have a lot to learn (Yes, I am a rookie).  In all candor, 80% of my tweets fall into the category of “Pass Along Value” and 20% of my tweets are “Self Promotion”.  I tweet to those that are interested in career advancement and want to get promoted faster and get bigger raises.  My strategy for Twitter has been to establish credibility by mixing great career information from other insightful bloggers and personalities with mine.  My goal is to promote my blog and my upcoming book.  I started tweeting as @ActAsIfSite and am transitioning to @JosephLavelle for these purposes.  On a side note, I also tweet as @HCITJobs, @Resultant, and @FCGAlumni for my other business interests.

I use a couple Twitter tools to make me more effective.   Hootsuite helps me schedule and track the clickthrough count of my tweets.  Tweetdeck helps me monitor the tweets of various categories of people that I follow.

Here is a list of my most popular tweets.  You will notice the mix of my blog posts and reference to others’ posts.  I know these are my most popular posts due to Hootsuite.
